Metropolitan Home Celebrates Its Design 100
05/20/2008
The magazine’s annual gala showcases the year’s best people, places and products in the world of design
New York, NY (May 2008) – Metropolitan Home, the definitive resource in modern design and contemporary style, celebrates its 11th annual “Design 100” issue with a gala event at The Four Seasons Restaurant/Pool Room on May 20 in New York City. The exclusive event and special gold-covered June issue celebrates the year’s most notable design luminaries, restaurateurs, destinations, stylish products and innovative ideas. In addition, the editorial team has taken an eye towards green by highlighting noteworthy eco-conscious projects, people and programs in the publication. Various designers and creations found on the Design 100 list will be highlighted throughout the evening including number 99, renowned chef and co-founder of the acclaimed, LA-based restaurant Osteria Mozza, Mario Batali. Other notable honorees include, LEGO for its latest landmark kit that includes a replica of the Eiffel Tower and production designer Dan Bishop and art director Christopher Brown, of the hit AMC series Mad Men, both of who will be present to toast this year’s exceptional talent. Additional attendees include designers Jamie Drake and Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz, artist Eames Demetrios, and manufacturer and distributor of fine contemporary furniture, lighting and carpets, Dennis Miller.
“Our mindset for compiling this year’s Design 100 list was to think a bit more ‘outside the box’, and focus on the function and purpose of design on an individual and global level,” states Donna Warner, Editor-In-Chief, Metropolitan Home. “From the honeybee and the color gold to Camp Aldersgate, to the Arctic Island nation of Greenland, we acknowledge the traditional concept of design and celebrate those master builders, inspirations and places that play a crucial role in the world’s livelihood. In addition to the magazine itself, this evening’s event provides the ideal forum for us to experience and celebrate our 2008 Design 100 honorees.”
Metropolitan Home’s editorial staff applied the same gold standard to selecting the “crème de la crème” of preeminent designers and creations as in years past to determine this selective list. This year’s special issue includes a variety of concept categories such as color, architecture / design, arts and culture, automotive, food, sustainable design, technology and travel. The list includes Smart Car inventor Nicholas Hayek, the Italian design factory Alessi, manufacturer of technologically advanced bikes and other retail products Puma, contemporary furniture company Ligne Roset, renowned sustainable designer Kieren Timberlake, and Cuban artist Jorge Pardo, to name a few. The gold cover of the June Design 100 issue is the first of its kind and the Metropolitan Home team hopes it will be considered a collectors edition for their readers.
To celebrate the annual issue, Metropolitan Home’s event will integrate many of the distinct Design 100 selections into the chic surroundings including Christian Lacroix’s eye-catching limited edition Evian water bottle, full-flavored beer selections from individual brewers Magic Hat, Skinny Dip, and Zonker, LuLu De Kwiatkowski’s chic note cards, and the distinctive black-and-white Calypso Bean, a hybrid of the kidney bean, from Rancho Gordo. Additionally, the world’s leading toy manufacturer and number twelve on the list, LEGO, will erect a 10-foot tall, golden replica of the Eiffel Tower in the restaurant’s pool. Guests will have the opportunity to participate in a raffle to win the large-scale Eiffel Tower or an Eiffel Tower Landmark kit from LEGO. In addition, two Philippe Starck Louis Ghost chairs from Kartell and dinner for two at one of Mario Batali’s top-rated restaurants in New York or Los Angeles will also be auctioned off. The platform that will hold the raffle prizes will be covered in Maya Romanoff’s wallpaper, Abacadazzle in Galactic Gold, that was featured on the front cover of the magazine. Proceeds from the raffle will benefit Camp Aldersgate, a not-for-profit camp for children with disabilities and number 20 on the list.
Metropolitan Home will host the “Design 100” event on May 20, 2008 from 6pm – 8pm at The Four Seasons Restaurant/Pool Room.
