Woman's Day Presents the Sixth Annual "Red Dress Awards" Honoring Women Making Strides in the Fight Against Heart Disease

02/03/2009

NEW YORK, NY (February 3, 2009) Woman’s Day magazine’s 6th Annual Red Dress Awards will commemorate American Heart Month by honoring three outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to the fight against heart disease, the number one killer of women today.

This year’s Red Dress Awards will be held on Wednesday, February 11th at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Allen Room. The Views Joy Behar will emcee the event, along with segment host Samantha Harris of The Insider and Dancing with the Stars. This year’s event will feature special performances by Robin Thicke and Joan Osborne.

One of the Award’s sponsors, Campbell Soup Company is teaming up with “30 Rock” star and heart health advocate Jane Krakowski and fashion icon Nicole Miller to help raise funds and awareness for the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement. Miller designed three one-of-a-kind red dresses and people can vote for their favorite dress at CampbellsAddressYourHeart.com through February 6. Each vote will trigger a $1 donation from Campbell to the cause (up to $275,000). Krakowski will unveil the winning dress at this year’s Red Dress Awards ceremony. Following the event, people can click on the winning dress online to continue the contributions to the cause thoughout the month.

This year’s event will not only honor those making a difference in the fight against heart disease, but will also give others the chance to make a difference. Tickets for the event are available by calling (212) 767-6300. All proceeds from the event will be donated to The Larry King Cardiac Foundation. Established in 1988 by Larry King, the Foundation provides funding for life saving cardiac procedures for individuals who, due to limited means and no insurance, would be otherwise unable to receive lifesaving treatment.

“Heart disease is the leading cause of death in women and actually kills more women than men each year,” said Jane Chesnutt, editor-in-chief of Woman’s Day. “Woman’s Day is deeply committed to making women aware of their risk, and to helping them protect themselves. Through the Red Dress Awards, we are proud to honor those who are truly making a difference in awareness and treatment.”

The 2009 Woman’s Day Red Dress Award recipients are:

· Representative Lois Capps, RN. Prior to joining Congress in 1998, Rep. Capps (D-California) worked as a nurse in Santa Barbara public schools for 20 years. When it comes to heart disease, she understands that educating women solves just part of the problem. That’s why she wrote the Heart for Women Act, which has passed in the House and will hopefully be enacted this year. This bipartisan bill will give grants to teach health care professionals about preventing and treating cardiovascular diseases in women, provide gender and race-specific information for researchers, and expand WISEWOMEN, a program sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control that offers heart-disease screening for low-income and uninsured women.

· Patrice Desvigne-Nickens, MD. The Heart Truth, a campaign from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) to educate women about preventing heart disease, wouldn’t be the same without the tireless work of Dr. Desvigne-Nickens. As the leader of the NHLBI’s Cardiovascular Medicine Scientific Research Group, she helped plan the NHLBI’s national initiative, which has been crucial in raising heart disease awareness among women. A trusted advisor to many Heart Truth partners, such as WomenHeart and the American Heart Association, Dr. Desvigne-Nickens is considered a “go-to” person for ideas on how to advance women’s heart-health issues and programs.

· Rose Marie Robertson, M.D. Chief science officer of the American Heart Association, Dr. Robertson coauthored the AHA’s Scientific Statement on Evidence-Based Guidelines for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in Women (2004) and has played a key role in developing and promoting the Go Red for Women program. While she was president of the AHA (2000-2001), they partnered with the Office of the Surgeon General, making the AHA’s work to reduce deaths from coronary heart disease by 25% by 2010 possible – a goal that was actually reached in 2008. In addition to her work with the AHA, Dr. Robertson was professor at Vanderbilt’s Women’s Health Center, where she established Vanderbilt’s Women’s Heart Center.

In addition, this year’s Red Dress Awards, will recognize Swarovski, for their outstanding commitment to fighting heart disease. Swarovski was one of the first companies to get involved with the cause, when they created the first red dress pin, made from Swarovski crystals in 2003. Over the years, Swarovski has donated more than $1.6 million to the cause through partnerships with the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women and the NHLBI’s Heart Truth Campaign. Each honoree will receive a Swarovski Red Dress designed award at the ceremony.

Honorees will be featured in the March 3rd issue of Woman’s Day, on newsstands February 10th. For more information on Woman’s Day Red Dress Awards, log onto www.womansday.com/reddress.

This year’s event is sponsored by: Campbell Soup Company, the maker’s of St. Joseph Aspirin, and St. Jude Medical and Conair and BaByliss PRO.
